How to remove sales tax from a total in Canada
Every Canadian sales tax is calculated on the price before tax. To work backwards, divide the total by 1 plus the combined rate for your province, then work out each tax from the pre-tax price.
| Formula | Example: $112 in British Columbia | |
|---|---|---|
| Price before tax | total ÷ (1 + combined rate) | $112 ÷ 1.12 = $100.00 |
| GST | pre-tax price × 5% | $100 × 0.05 = $5.00 |
| PST | pre-tax price × 7% | $100 × 0.07 = $7.00 |
For HST provinces there is only one tax: in Ontario, $113 ÷ 1.13 = $100 before tax and $13 HST.

Examples: what's inside a $50 total
| Province | Price before tax | Taxes |
|---|---|---|
| Alberta | $47.62 | GST $2.38 |
| Ontario | $44.25 | HST $5.75 |
| Nova Scotia | $43.86 | HST $6.14 |
| British Columbia | $44.64 | GST $2.23 + PST $3.13 |
| Quebec | $43.49 | GST $2.17 + QST $4.34 |
Why the taxes can be a cent off
When two taxes are rounded separately, they don't always add up to the total. In British Columbia, $50 ÷ 1.12 = $44.64, and 5% and 7% of that round to $2.23 and $3.12 – one cent short of $50. The calculator always makes the pre-tax price and the taxes add back to the exact total you entered, and puts the leftover cent on the last tax. Your receipt may split it differently.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate GST backwards from a total?
Divide the total by 1 plus the combined tax rate. In Alberta (GST 5%), $105 ÷ 1.05 = $100 before tax, so the GST is $5. In Ontario (HST 13%), divide by 1.13.
How do I remove GST and PST together?
Add the two rates and divide by 1 plus the total. In British Columbia (GST 5% + PST 7% = 12%), $112 ÷ 1.12 = $100 before tax, with $5 GST and $7 PST. Both taxes are worked out on the pre-tax price, so you can't remove one and then the other.
Why can't I just subtract 13% in Ontario?
Because the HST was added to the pre-tax price, not to the total. 13% off $113 is $98.31, but the correct pre-tax price is $113 ÷ 1.13 = $100.
Is QST charged on top of GST in Quebec?
No. Since 2013 the QST (9.975%) is calculated on the price before GST, just like the GST (5%). Together they add 14.975% to the pre-tax price.
Which provinces charge HST?
Ontario (13%), Nova Scotia (14%), and New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island (15%). Alberta and the territories charge GST only. British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Quebec charge GST plus a separate provincial tax.
Did the HST rate change in Nova Scotia?
Yes. Nova Scotia's HST went down from 15% to 14% on April 1, 2025. The calculator uses 14%.
